Episode 34: A Case for Indoctrination and Morals

The Problem

  • Christians have made small headway in the culture wars recently as the transvestite movement overplayed its hand. However, many claim that the problem is not the evil ideology of transgenderism, but the attempt to indoctrinate morals. People say that the government and schools should not push morals. I have even heard people say that parents should not indoctrinate their children.
  • However, the problem is not that parents and schools indoctrinate children or that the government pushes morals, but that evil immoralities are being pushed on children and the general population.
  • Definition of indoctrinate: 1. to instruct in, or imbue with, doctrines, theories, or beliefs, as of a sect. 2. To instruct; teach

Positive Secular Examples of Indoctrination

  • Grammar, mathematics, physics, fundamentals, safety, etc.

Biblical Argument for Indoctrination

Deuteronomy 6: 4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[b] 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 4: 9 “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children— 10 how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’ 11 And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13 And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14 And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess.

Ephesians 6: 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Luke 11: 24 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”

When Indoctrination is Bad

  • When what is indoctrinated is immoral, evil, or untrue.
  • When indoctrination prevents the teaching of what is true.
  • When indoctrination is in matters of subjectivity.
  • When indoctrination is in questionable things.

Conclusion

  • Indoctrination is not universally bad. Good morals ought to be indoctrinated.
  • There is no neutral ground when it comes to morality.
  • Not only within the household and church, but also within the public square, Christians should not be duped into silence on matters of right and wrong.
